Meet Winona!

WIMO na is a 20 year old registered Tennessee Walking horse mare and is just as sweet as can be. We rescued her from our local auction yard along with our other miniature horse Diesel in January 2021. Winona came to us nothing but skin and bones. They told us she had been used as a broodmare most of her life and that she had recently been exposed to another stallion which meant she may have been pregnant! This was a huge concern to us especially with her age and the physical condition she was in. She was in no shape to be carrying a baby. After going through her quarantine period she began to gain weight and we had our vet come out to perform an ultrasound.  As we watched the screen our team fell quiet. To our upsetting shock we found no baby, but rather a large sized tumor on her ovaries. This was heartbreaking news, we proceeded to have blood work done and a week later the results returned from the lab as positive. This meant we have two options, surgery or euthanasia. in the midst of all this, one of our volunteers fell head over heels in love with Winona. She came to me with the proposition of adopting her and to her family and proceeding with the surgery. We decided this would be the best outcome for Winona and her future family so decided to proceed! In early 2021 Winona underwent her operation which was a huge success. She lived a wonderful several months with her incredibly loving family and was treated like the queen she deserve to be. Sadly, Winona suffered a severe case of pneumonia in the end of 2021 and had to say her goodbyes. Her family was devastated but her legacy lives on as they continue to help Horses like Winona.
